Ján Labant studied the guitar at the Conservatory in Zilina with Prof. Dushan Lehotsky, before completing his studies at the Pedagogical Faculty in Nitra and at the Academy of Dramatic Music in Bratislava, in Prof. Jozef Zsapka class. Since 1987 he teaches the guitar at the Conservatory in Zilina and since 1997 also at the Art Academy in Banska Bystrica, and dedicates himself to his activities as a concert guitarist.
He received many prizes in national and international competitions and participated in international guitar festivals and master classes in Hungary, Poland, Germany and Belgium.
His diploma work at the Conservatory in Zilina was dedicated to a composition by J. Rodrigo: „Concierto de Aranjuez“ which he played with the National Chamber Orchestra of Zilina; he was awarded the mention of the best graduate of the year 1982. In 1983 Ján Labant and Ph.Dr. Pavol Sika founded an international guitar festival „ Cithara aediculae“ in Nitra, a festival of which Jan Labant is every year the artistic director and in the frame of which he also gives a concert.
Jan Labant gave concerts not only in Slovakia, but also in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Austria, England and Australia. He records for the radio and dedicates himself also to chamber music and with a trio of string instruments, in a duo with a semi-acoustic guitar and in a trio
(classical guitar, semi-acoustic guitar, soprano singer) and also co-operates with orchestras. He gave master courses at conservatory in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, France
and at academy in Australia (Melbourne, Canberra).
He is regularly invited to act as a jury member in national and international competitions.
