Graduate of the Pardubice Conservatory in classical guitar. Since 1994 he has been teaching guitar at the Střezina Elementary School of Arts in Hradec Králové. In 1997 he founded the first guitar orchestra in the Czech Republic. Currently he is the head of the classical guitar department.
In 2003, he founded and until 2012 led the Bohemian Guitar Orchestra, whose members were teachers and students of elementary schools and conservatories from various cities in the Czech Republic. Here he served as conductor and artistic director of the ensemble. For this ensemble he also performed transcriptions of orchestral works by A. Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, M. Giuliani, W.A. Mozart, G. Rossini, A. Dvořák, A. Khachaturian, A. Piazzolla.
The Bohemian Guitar Orchestra has collaborated with the outstanding Czech guitarist, composer and teacher Štěpán Rak. It recorded two CDs, the first in 2007 (J.S. Bach, A. Vivaldi, J.W. Duarte, A. Piazzolla, Š. Rak, Latin American songs) and the second in 2010 (M. Giuliani, A. Jungbluth, A. Dvořák, I. Albéniz).
From 2007 to 2015, R. Coufal conducted the Mikulov Guitar Orchestra at the Mikulov International Guitar Festival.
From 2009 to 2012 he organized guitar orchestra concerts in the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Hall. More than a hundred guitarists performed together at these concerts
As a performer, he has worked with a number of bands and has collaborated on twenty-one CDs with music of various kinds (folk, rock, country, southern rock, grunge, classical music) and also on music videos and music programmes for Czech Television and TV Nova (band Wild West).
In addition to teaching classical guitar, since 2001 he has also organized weekend guitar seminars and summer guitar camps for children and adults, focusing on learning to play guitar accompaniments, songs, improvisation and arranging.
He also teaches seminars on guitar accompaniment, songwriting, improvisation and arranging for children’s bands and lectures on guitar orchestra leadership for teachers of music schools and conservatories in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
He is invited to juries of national and international guitar competitions.

From pedagogical work:
Fifteen students admitted to the conservatory since 1993.
Since 1996, his pupils have won top prizes at national and international solo and ensemble guitar competitions (solo competitions – National Rounds of the ZUŠ Competition, National Competition Prague Junior Note, International Competition Františkovy Pramínek, International Competition Festival of Ivan Ballu Dolný Kubín, International Competition in Solo Guitar Zruč nad Sázavou, International Competition Praguitarra, chamber music competitions – National Competition in Chamber Guitar Playing Hradecké Guitarreando, International Competition of Guitar and Mandolin Orchestras Prague Strings, International Competition GOFI Bad Nauheim – Germany).
He has received five awards for outstanding pedagogical work.
In 2016 he received the Pedagogical Personality of the Year award from the Hradec Králové City Council.
